Many shell-type boilers carry a large bath of liquid water which is heated to a higher temperature and pressure (enthalpy) than boiling water would be at atmospheric pressure. It was the train crew that was almost always killed. Whole houses can be leveled. Ignition failure, improper gas lines, or loose valves leads to combustion gas buildup in the high-temperature vessel.
